The Basics of Seven Card Stud

By Mary M. Alward

Seven card stud is a game where players use the seven cards they’re dealt to make their best five card poker hand. As the cards are dealt, several rounds of betting occur. It’s a fairly easy game for both fun and serious play.

How to Play

    • Collect an ante from each player.

    • Deal three cards to each player; the first two are dealt face down. The last card is dealt face up.

    • Once the cards have been dealt as specified, a round of betting takes place.

    • Deal three more cards to each player after betting is complete. These cards are dealt face up. Players should now have six cards each.

    • At this time, another round of betting takes place.

    • The seventh card is dealt to the players face side down.

    • The final round of betting takes place.

    • Winner takes all.

In today’s world of casinos and poker houses, seven card stud can be played in almost every poker venue.

Tips

    • Seven card stud requires all players at the table to be alert if they hope to win. Keep a sharp eye on the cards that are visible on the table. Then, use a strategy that is based on the cards you’ve seen. If you have a strong hand, it might be wise to bet small and allow the other players at the table to increase the stakes. If you’re the last person to play, bluff a little and steal the pot.

    • If you have a strong hand when the first cards are dealt, you may chose to force the hand a little by raising the stakes. This can eliminate the bad hands and allow you to play heads up with players who have the strongest hands.

    • Your table position is important when playing seven card stud. It helps you to decide how to play certain hands.

    • If you’re losing, move to a different position or to a different table.

    • Make a mental note when you use this theory. You’ll find out your cash increases. It really does work. If your luck goes sour at the new table or position, move on.

    • Playing at a casino when you’re learning seven card stud or any other form of poker for that matter, is risky. Play tight. Don’t continue play unless you are dealt three good cards at the beginning. The only requirement is that you will have to ante up if you hold the initial lowest card. It doesn’t cost much and if you watch the game closely, you can learn a lot.

    • Use intimidation tactics if you are able to. Bring approximately one hundred times the minimum bet and keep the chips on the table. This is a great intimidation ploy. Why? Because any players who are new to the game will be looking at your pile of chips instead of concentrating on their game.

    • Always be polite and courteous to the other players. If you’re winning, your good manners will contribute to your bottom line. People aren’t so apt to be upset if they’re losing to someone with a courteous personality. Put on the persona that you’re just in the game to have fun.

    • Last, but far from least, this warning; never walk into a poker house or casino expecting to win, unless you’ve practice the game for hundreds of hours and fully understand every aspect of the game. Experienced players term these people as “live fish” and love to see them take a seat at their tables. This is an easy way to win some extra cash. Use caution. It could be a most expensive lesson if you’re not on your toes.

Play for fun when you’re learning and then slowly take part in games with higher stakes. This way you won’t lose a bundle while you’re learning.
