Top 10 Starting Hands of Omaha Hi-Lo

By Deanna Couras Goodson

Poker Tutorial Image
Omaha Hi-lo is a game that's slowly gaining in popularity. People like the idea of splitting their pot. With more than one winner possible per hand, there's a lot more betting and calling of bets, it seems. Pots can get quite large, pretty fast. You're not going to get someone out - not the way most people play.

So, as Doyle Brunson commonly says, "win big and lose little." If you can master that in Omaha Hi-Lo, your potential is limitless. In order to lose little, you should know that a good Omaha player will go into a pot less often than a good Texas Hold 'Em player does. There's just less mathematical possibilities for having the nuts either on the low or high side and too many possibilities for a split. Too many splits in one pot can actually cause you to lose money.

If you play just these top ten hands, then you can assure yourself of some easy Omaha success. Just go in on these and toss the rest, unless your gut (or your blind) tells you otherwise.

The two basic rules of the starting hands are:

• They should be coordinated. Basically, they should work together somehow such to help make a flush, straight or even a full house. Pairs rarely win in Omaha and 2-pairs USUALLY lose. Yes, 2-pairs usually lose!
• Matching suits are better especially if you have a very high card (PAINT or an ACE) in the same suit as another.

Without further ado, here’s a widely-accepted list of the Top 10 starting hands in Omaha Hi-Lo.

A few notes: The “X” stands for any card. The “*” prior to the number stands for a ‘tied-hand’. When you see two “X” in one hand, just remember that you gain a few percentage points to assure the nuts if the cards are paired.)

1 ) A,A,2,3

9*) A,2,Q,K

9*) A,2,K,J

9*) A,2,X,X

10) A,3,K,K

So, there you have it – the top 10 ranking hands in Omaha Hi-Lo. If you can play these hands consistently and play them strong, you’ll be well on your way to being a winning Omaha Hi-Lo player.
