Poker Tells that will Win You Money

By Mary M. Alward

A poker tell is any behavior, habit, or physical reaction that allows you to gather information about an oppent's hand. Tells can also give your opponents information about your hand. Tells can apply against both beginners and experienced players. However, it's best to use caution. Tells, like many other aspects of poker can have exceptions and contradictions. At times, experienced players will throw out false tells to confuse their opponents.

Watch your opponent's eyes. They rarely lie. For this reason, more experienced players sometimes choose to wear sunglasses. Some players cannot resist the temptation to stare at hole cards. If you watch carefully, you will notice that the peek they take is longer when there are hole cards in their hand.

If a player is hoping to steal the pot, you may see him looking to his left to try and determine if the players have taken a quick peek at their cards and are planning to fold.

Watch facial expressions. Not everyone has a poker face. Professionals often try to hide their faces by wearing a cap or hat and keeping their eyes down. This avoids a stare-down.

Experienced players will look for repetitive body language, such as tics that players display when they are nervous. If your hand is weak, you may reflect it in your face and when you hold a strong hand, a contrast in facial expression may occur.

Some players love to put on an act to confuse other players. If they have an excellent hand, they may act indifferent. If a player's voice level increases when he's raising the pot in hopes to intimidate his opponents, he may be bluffing.

Players who are planning to confront others, or who expect a confrontation, may show signs of anxiety, which causes physical changes such as pupil dilation, flexing of muscles or a flexing of the jaw. Players holding huge hands may change their voice level or you may notice chest expansion is abnormal. Experienced players watch the vein near your temple that signals a change in blood pressure.

Another indication of anxiety is the trembling of hands. If a player's hands shake, he is under extreme stress. This tell can represent a big hand.

If players connect, after a flop they may quickly glance at the chips they hold. This is often a subconscious reaction that may indicate a plan of attack.

One of the most revealing tells is when a player has a habit of betting during certain situations. One example of this could be that the player habitually folds after being re-raised.

Body posture and attitude are excellent tells. A player may change his body posture and give away his hand's strength. For instance, a player's shoulders may slump if his hand is weak, or he may sit more erect if he has an excellent hand. Another tell is when a player always leans forward when he is bluffing.

When you sit down at a poker table, take note of the way each player stacks his chips. Loose players sometimes leave their chips unorganized in a sloppy stack. Experienced players almost always organize their chips neatly and in monetary order.

Though the tells in this article may not be accurate each and every time, keep a sharp eye out for habits that indicate your oppontents next move. Tells can definitely help you steal the pot if you stay alert.
