Review: Little Green Book: Lessons and Teachings in No Limit Texas Hold'em

By Eric Maus

Phil Gordon's "Little Green Book: Lessons and Teachings in No Limit Texas Hold'em" is a book that I highly recommend for a number of reasons.

First, Gordon's smooth writing style makes this a very quick and informative read, although he does advise you to really pay attention to detail if you want to absorb a great deal of information that is presented.

PokerRoom.com

Gordon, who is also the co-host of "Celebrity Poker Showdown,” brings up a lot of information that is very useful to beginner players. For instance, he notes that pocket aces against a random hand will win 85.5% of the time, but mentions that pocket aces against four random hands wins just 55.8% of the time. Thus, expressing the importance sometimes raising pre-flop to increase your chances of winning a pot.

Another interesting thing that Gordon points out in his book is how 7-8 suited is a much stronger hand than many beginner players realize. He ran a computer simulation comparing how 7-8 suited would do up against all combinations of Ace-Ace, King-King, Ace-King, Ace-Queen, Ace-King suited and Ace-Queen suited and it showed that 7-8 suited has roughly a 32% of chance of winning.

Conversely, Ace-Jack against all those same hands only has a 25.7% chance of winning.

Despite being a poker pro, Gordon never talks down to the reader. He freely admits that he is not the best poker player in the world, but that he is a winning player. As of 2005, Gordon's total live tournament winnings exceed $900,000.

He also stresses that even though he makes a living off poker, he still seeks the advice of other professionals and feels like that, along with practice and reading about the game, is critical to becoming a better player. You will not become a world champion by simply reading this book, but you will pick up some advice that I believe will be valuable in improving your game.
