A Beginner's Guide to Casino Poker

By Mary Shaw

Even to the most seasoned poker players, the prospect of playing the game in a casino for the first time can seem daunting.

Here are some tips that will prepare you for the experience.

Do Your Homework

Casino poker is technically very similar to the poker you play with your family and friends around the card table at home. Typically, the house does not play, but takes a percentage of the winnings.

At most U.S. casinos, the poker tables feature 7 Card Stud or Texas Hold'em. Each casino, however, will have its own rules. Before sitting down at a casino poker table, be sure to familiarize yourself with the house rules.

Some casinos offer free or low-cost poker lessons, which are highly recommended for newcomers to the casino world. You might also want to purchase a book or video tutorial to familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of the game before taking on the pros.

Play Conservatively

Even if you have money to burn, start out slow. Begin at the free tables (if your casino has them) or the lowest-limit tables available, and then work up as you feel comfortable. This will give you some good practice, and can help you build up some winnings - and confidence - to then use at the higher-limit tables.

Keep Your Wits

One of the most important things to keep in mind while playing at the casino poker tables is to stay calm and keep your wits about you. The more seasoned pros can often sense when an opponent has little experience, and will try to psyche you out. Don't let this happen. Be aware of your facial expressions and your body language.

Don't stall the game. Unlike home games, casino poker moves quickly. Most of the players at the table are there to win, not to relax and have fun. You'll likely face some criticism if you slow the game down.

Also be careful not to drink too much. Many casinos seem to make it as easy as possible to consume too many alcoholic beverages. Remember that alcohol can lower your inhibitions and impair your judgment, causing you to bet too much money on the wrong hands, and lose track of your overall winnings and losses.

Set Limits

Casino poker can be addictive. Don't get carried away. Set firm limits on how much you are willing to lose. If your net losses reach that limit, leave the table immediately. Don't give in to the call of credit cards and cash machines. Poker should be a game, not a problem.

Have Fun!

Now that you know what to expect, it's time to visit the casino. Be sure to keep these lessons in mind as you play. Good luck and good fun!
